Meeting Customers in Sunshine and Snow around Orlando and Boston

Last week Gary Morin returned from a 2 week trip to the USA, meeting customers in Boston and helping Dataforensics, our Premier Partner, exhibit our software solutions at the Geo-Institute’s Geotechnical Frontiers conference in Orlando.

The focus of the visit was a presentation to the Geotechnical Frontiers conference, by Gary, entitled “A Case Study:  Silvertown Road Tunnel, London – Applying BIM principles to the Geotechnical process”.  The 30 minute presentation highlighted a great example project that detailed the complete geotechnical data journey and showed how, with the aid of good geotechnical data management, historical data from previous projects can be used as a source of information and insight to the new project.  The paper was co-authored with Atkins.

“Is is an honour to be able to present UK best practice to a mainly American audience and discuss the pros and cons of each country’s approach to BIM.  There is a lot that each audience can learn from each other and being able to work both in the UK and North America is very exciting at this time” said Gary.

After the conference Gary moved north to Boston where he filled 5 days of visits with engineering companies in and around Boston.

Even though the use of technology has enabled us to communicate across the world at the speed of light, nothing beats a face to face meeting with the people who are using our software and looking to upgrade existing solutions.  While other companies are using technology to replace this traditional method of getting in front of people, the social media updates that followed Gary around Boston highlights why we firmly believe that the investment in individual meetings will never be fully replaced by technology.

While in Boston, Gary was able to accept a tour invitation of the Autodesk Build Space facility.  The BUILDers in Residence were working on projects in digital fabrication, sustainable design, construction and design robotics and give an exciting glimpse on what the future may hold.

“It was very good to meet John Harding at the Autodesk Boston Build Space office.  It’s a great building and inspiring to see young engineers working and collaborating with some fantastic technology” Gary posted on LinkedIn after his visit.

One of our team travels around North America every couple of months training and meeting users.  If you would like us to visit you on our next trip around North America, please get in touch using our contact form.

Being British, we cannot leave this report without talking about the weather!  After a week in Florida in “British Summer” weather, Gary’s visit to Boston was perfectly timed to enjoy “a harsh British Winter” the following week.
